On Thursday, May 17, Burundi will hold a referendum to amend its national constitution. Given the country’s recent history of challenges, along with an overall economic slowdown, we invite you to join us in praying Psalm 91 over Burundi:
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1). Father, we ask for your protection over the 10 million people who live in Burundi, including the 122,000 men and women served by HOPE Burundi and Turame Community Finance, HOPE’s microfinance bank in Burundi. We know that You grieve with us over conflict and violence, and we ask for Your intervention and Your peace in Burundi.
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart (Psalm 91:4). Lord, we pray that the Church in Burundi would be a light amid darkness in the coming months. We pray that believers would be examples of Your extraordinary love at a time of great need, and we pray that many more may come to trust in You.
If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent (Psalm 91:9-10). We pray for the 300,000 Burundians who emigrated in recent years. As they worry over the safety of loved ones still living in Burundi, we pray for a deep assurance of Your love for their friends and family. We pray for comfort as they mourn over the ongoing unrest in their home country.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. (Psalm 91:11) Lord, we know that You are Protector. No matter the outcome of the referendum, we ask that violence and unrest would cease. Raise up leaders in Burundi who will rule with integrity and sacrificial love for their people. Beyond this situation, we ask that you bring Your lasting peace to Burundi, Father.
