Barrot’s story: how a taxi driver turned around his family’s future

“In 2017, when I joined HOPE Congo, I faced some challenges. One of them was the absence of insurance for my taxi. … My vehicle was in poor condition, with an engine problem,” reflects Barrot Nzingoula.

In the Republic of Congo, owning a reliable vehicle for a taxi business is often considered a promising way to move out of poverty. And the industry is growing quickly. By 2029, the number of individuals working in this business is expected to increase. But Barrot’s prospects didn’t seem so promising: “The future seemed bleak.”

An opportunity to secure financial freedom

As a father of five in the Republic of Congo, Barrot felt responsible for his family’s well-being, especially his children’s education. But, with a car in need of repairs, his taxi business was not bringing in the steady income he needed to cover these expenses. Without many options to change his situation, he felt trapped.

Had it not been for Barrot’s sister, who told him about HOPE Congo, our microfinance institution in Congo, his dream to invest in his children’s future would’ve remained grim.

Barrot used his first loan to fix his car for his taxi business. “HOPE provided me an opportunity. … [And] I took advantage of it,” he remembers. “Without HOPE, I don’t think I would have made it. Thanks to their assistance, I am now free.”

Positive momentum

microfinance helps people move out of povertyAs HOPE Congo supports Barrot and his business, he is now working toward a brighter future for his family. “Thanks to HOPE Congo, one of my children has successfully passed the baccalaureate [college], while the other has obtained the Brevet d’études [vocational certificate],” Barrot proudly shares. “I can confidently say that HOPE has been a great source of support for me thus far.”

Beyond financial support, Barrot’s microfinance group also grounds him in prayer. As the group leader, he facilitates prayer, Bible readings, and communal fellowship—all part of how HOPE Congo’s groups are organized around discipleship.

“Ever since I joined HOPE, my life has undergone a positive transformation, and everything seems to be better now.”

The road to a better future

While Barrot’s circumstances are improving, he dreams of more. “Apart from my work as a taxi driver, I would like to explore other avenues to generate income. By taking out the next set of loans, I plan to invest in expanding my business. Specifically, I would like to establish a workshop for tire repair services.”

With potential business growth, Barrot hopes to open a car repair station, which could even create more jobs for his community.

“With the help of HOPE, I aim to achieve more in the future. Things are gradually improving, and I trust that by God’s grace, my future will be brighter.”

How HOPE is helping taxi drivers

As we celebrate how God is providing for Barrot’s family through his taxi business, we seek to empower more entrepreneurs like him. And for us, that starts with listening.

Our HOPE Congo team surveyed taxi drivers like Barrot in Point Noir and Brazzaville. We learned that 78% of them dreamed of owning their cabs. The challenge? These drivers lacked access to the capital needed to buy the vehicles.

Recognizing this, the HOPE Congo team developed and launched a loan product specifically for taxi drivers. The initiative aims to empower more taxi entrepreneurs like Barrot—supporting them and their family’s dreams.

We praise God for His work in Barrot’s family’s life! For another story from the Republic of Congo, watch how Rofelia uses her business to share the hope of Christ with customers and friends.
