In this video interview, Lalaine Naquita, the Savings and Credit Association program specialist for HOPE’s partner CCT, talks about how the very poor in the Philippines are finding a way to save.

Lalaine’s team of 35 savings facilitators targets nontraditional clientele, including street dwellers, indigenous populations, fishermen, and even children. Some wouldn’t think these individuals could save—sometimes they don’t think they can—but the importance of saving is nowhere more evident than among these populations, where a savings account can provide a vital safety net. Already the program has grown to reach over 2,600 savers throughout the country. Lalaine’s goals for the program are ambitious, to say the least: “My goal is that all of the SCA partners would know God as their Savior and learn why savings is so important,” she says.

I recently had the opportunity to conduct two days of marketing and communications workshops for the staff of CCT, HOPE’s partner in the Philippines. Though I had come to share my area of expertise, I truly relished the opportunity to witness theirs as I visited the ministry’s expansive work.

Our workshops were held at CCT’s retreat and training center in the town of Tagatay, which boasts amazing lake and volcano views. While the more affluent trek to this area as tourists, tucked away in the back streets and alleys are many who struggle daily to provide for their families. Anita Aguinaldo

While Anita Aguinaldo appreciates the loans she has received from CCT, HOPE’s partner in the Philippines, she is particularly grateful for the biblically based business training that is coupled with those loans: “With the help of CCT, money gets invested, not merely spent.” Anita has invested her loans in two businesses: making and selling rags and selling cosmetics. With her profits, Anita and her husband have been able to build a larger house for their family of seven.

Aura Flores

While she once spent her days scavenging to help provide for her family of five, Aura Flores has been able to use loans from CCT, HOPE’s partner in the Philippines, to begin a pillow-making business. Now she dreams of one day passing her business on to her children, so that they will never have to live in poverty. Additionally, she and her husband appreciate the Bible study they attend through CCT, as it has helped their marriage grow stronger.

Cindy

Rejected by family and friends after escaping a drug addiction, Cindy – with her husband Arnaldo and daughter Jenny – lived isolated in a small shack. Desperate to earn an income, they borrowed money from moneylenders whose unreasonable rates plunged them further into debt. Then Cindy sought a loan from CCT, HOPE’s partner in the Philippines, and, touched by what her loan officer shared, accepted Jesus into her heart.  A physical and spiritual transformation began, resulting in a profitable business and reconciliation with her estranged family. “[God] saw me, came to me, and upheld me. He really loves me,” Cindy testifies.
