Liz Fretes is an experienced and talented artisan living in the outskirts of Asunción, Paraguay’s capital city. For 20 years, she’s practiced the craft of Ñandutí (“spider web”) pieces, a traditional Paraguayan lace.

Liz would sell her Ñandutí crafts, but it didn’t bring in enough money to provide for her family as a single mother, including her daughters, grandchildren (one of whom is pictured above), and her elderly father. She would take on odd jobs—cleaning homes and selling goods on the street—to try and make ends meet, but she couldn’t leave her children alone for long and paying for childcare was impossible.

When a doctor diagnosed one of her children with asthma, Liz’s money problems only worsened. Determined to get the necessary medication, Liz took on more physically demanding work despite her chronic back pain—sacrificing her own health to preserve her child’s. “There was no other option,” she remembers. When Vilda Fretel Asencios, a single mom of four, joined Inspiradas por Cristo (“inspired by Christ”) savings group a few years ago, she saw the new opportunities that it would open to her. Supported by Comas CMA Church, HOPE International’s partner in Peru, the group brought together neighbors in Vilda’s community to pray, worship, receive training, and save money together.

As Vilda and the other group members have grown closer to Christ and each other, they’ve shared their dreams for the future, along with their fears. Both often centered around those they care about most: their children.

There’s so much we’re grateful for as we reflect on 2024. From bringing more hearts to saving faith to empowering Ukrainian IDPs and members of Zimbabwe’s isolated Doma community, God has done incredible things across the HOPE International network.

How a savings group helped Sandrine find community, deeper faith, and a better future

Sandrine Niwemuraza had every reason to stay away from church. “[My] mother used to encourage me to go to church, but I did not want to because I didn’t feel welcomed.”

While still in high school in rural Rwanda, Sandrine became pregnant, and she and her mother—also a single parent—felt despair about their situation. They now faced the reality of even deeper generational poverty. Rejected by their extended family, church, and neighbors, they felt alone.

This spring at HOPE International, we released “Dreams for My Daughter,” a short film sharing the story of a young woman in rural Rwanda determined to beat the odds and hold on to her dreams while raising her daughter. The film is based on the life of Aline Mushimiyimana. Here, we share more about Aline’s life and journey that inspired us so much.
