Traditions abound at Christmas time. Though each family celebration is unique, we wanted to offer a glimpse into how those served by the HOPE network around the world may be joining together with family, friends, and neighbors to rejoice in Christ’s arrival. We marvel at the beauty of so many countries and cultures celebrating the gift of Jesus’ birth and invite you to pause and reflect on the meaning behind your own familiar traditions.

Fourteen years ago, my wife, Jeanie, and I were looking for organizations that our family could partner with. As believers, we were searching not just for a nonprofit but for a ministry that does good work while sharing the Gospel. And as someone who built a career in the accounting field, I sought an organization making the biggest possible impact per giving dollar.

At HOPE International, we want to be the hands and feet of Jesus to a world in need of His love, and we are glad we’re not alone in this mission. This Giving Tuesday, we’d like to shine a spotlight on five organizations working to bring hope and healing to refugees and displaced communities around the world.

In the past ten years, the number of refugees around the world has doubled to nearly 21 million. From Syria to Venezuela, Afghanistan, Yemen, and so many other parts of the world, people have made the difficult choice to leave their homes in pursuit of safety.

Jean Claude Kubwayo knew that goats would be a wise investment.

In rural Burundian communities like Jean Claude’s, goats and other livestock can provide a regular supply of meat, milk, and manure for crops. Animal products add nutritional and caloric value to a family’s diet, so simply owning livestock can improve a family’s overall health. Continue Reading…

Not every small business owner aspires to build a small business empire, but Marcel Sinayobye and his wife, Jeanne Nyirangendahimana, are entrepreneurial to the core. While raising eight children, they have built more than 10 businesses throughout their community of Rusizi, Rwanda, and beyond.

And while we know this transformation won’t happen to every man or woman who receives a $48 loan, we marvel when it does.

In recent months, we’ve been inspired by examples of meaningful involvement. From the men and women who support HOPE to the families we serve, we regularly hear stories of sacrificial generosity. Below are just three of these stories—each one paired with a few actionable ideas.

Give your extra stuff

When it was time for the Haanen family (pictured above) of Littleton, CO, to replace their 8-year-old van, they realized they had grown attached. The van had served their growing family well—and they wanted it to continue serving.

After donating the vehicle, the family of six perused HOPE’s gift catalog and imagined their van funding the purchase of cash registers, seeds, and sewing machines for hardworking entrepreneurs around the world.

Take a look around your house for things you’re no longer using, imagine all the good they could do, and then part with them, donating any funds you raise to an organization you trust.
